Frank T. Bunch, M.D., F.A.C.C., of Cardiology Associates, recently returned from a Global Sales Meeting held in Baltimore by Spectranetics company. Dr. Bunch was one of only eight physicians considered to be top experts in their fields invited from around the country to present at the meeting. The physicians were asked to provide new information about developments in treating peripheral vascular disease.
Dr. Bunch gave his presentation on his technique of using a laser on peripheral arteries. He has been involved in multiple peripheral research trials over the last several years, and data from those trials has been published in major medical journals. The research Dr. Bunch is conducting may eventually lead to a new line of laser equipment which will be even more beneficial for patient care.
Peripheral vascular disease is a build-up of plaque (cholesterol and fatty substances) in artery walls leading to places in the body other than the heart. Plaque deposits in arteries leading to the heart can cause a heart attack. Plaque deposits in arteries leading to the legs, kidneys or brain can cause extreme leg pain and immobility leading to amputation in the worst cases, renal failure or stroke. Nearly 50% of patients with coronary artery disease can expect to develop some form of peripheral vascular disease.
Cardiology Associates is a 23 physician group providing comprehensive heart services including pediatric cardiology, adult clinical and interventional cardiology, electrophysiology and specialized heart failure and cholesterol clinics. For more information, call (251) 990-9500.
