Mobile, AL - Jason H. Cole, M.D., F.A.C.C. of Cardiology Associates, has been selected to present a scientific abstract of his Cardiac CT research results, in the form of an oral presentation, at the Annual Scientific Session of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) to be held in Atlanta March 11 – 14, 2006.
Of more than 5,000 physician submissions, approximately 1,600 were selected to present their findings in various areas of cardiovascular care and treatment at the meeting and for national publication by the American College of Cardiology. Of the 1,600 abstracts, 10 are dedicated to cardiac CT, the newest technique for imaging the heart and detecting either the presence of or the preliminary signs for developing heart disease.
In Dr. Cole’s study, he analyzes the diagnostic correlation between cardiac CT and cardiac catheterization – the degree to which each test accurately diagnoses the same type and degree of heart disease in a patient. His abstract is the only one that demonstrates the cost effectiveness of cardiac CT vs. cardiac catheterization.
Actual results of the study are “embargoed” by the ACC until the date of public presentation by Dr. Cole, March 13, 2006, but Dr. Cole’s study looks at several aspects of this new technology that are pertinent to patients, physicians, hospitals and insurance companies: 1) Number of patients that are able to avoid invasive catheterization by means of cardiac CT 2) predictive/diagnostic accuracy of cardiac CT and finally 3) the cost savings per patient not undergoing cardiac catheterization which will benefit payors and down the line will ultimately benefit patients as well.
