Cardiology Associates is pleased to announce that it is now seeing electrophysiology patients in its Fairhope office. James A. Storey, M.D., F.A.C.C. is seeing patients in Fairhope at 188 Hospital Drive once a week. In addition, Dr. Storey is doing procedures such as ICDs (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator), Biventricular ICDs (Bi-V ICD’s), and pacemakers at Thomas Hospital. Before Dr. Storey arrived, patients had to go to hospitals outside of Baldwin County to receive ICDs and Bi-V ICD’s.
Electrophysiologists are cardiologists who specialize in the electrical rhythms of the heart. Slow heart rhythms (bradycardia), and fast rhythms such as supraventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter are some examples of abnormal heart beats that can be diagnosed and treated by an electrophysiologist. Once an arrhythmia has been diagnosed, a physician can offer the appropriate treatment to restore normal rhythm, which may include anything from medication to implantable pacemakers or defibrillators. An ICD is a special implantation device used to treat fast heart rhythms. The Biventricular, or Bi-V, ICD is used to treat fast heart rhythms and to help improve the heart’s function in patients with heart failure.
Dr. Storey attended medical school at Columbia University in New York, NY, went on to internship at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD and then to residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. He completed his cardiology fellowship at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, CA and his electrophysiology fellowship at the University of California San Diego Medical Center.
