The physicians of Cardiology Associates are pleased to welcome Robert A. VerNooy, M.D., FACC. Dr. VerNooy will join Stephanie D. Grosz, M.D, FACC and D. Scott Kirby, M.D, FACC in providing electrophysiology services for the Mobile area. James A. Storey, M.D., FACC is relocating from Mobile to Baldwin County.
Dr. VerNooy comes to Mobile from Wilmington, North Carolina. He graduated Cum Laude from Colgate University in Hamilton, New York and received his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, New York. Following medical school, he completed his internship, residency, and cardiology and electrophysiology fellowships at the University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville, Virginia. Dr. VerNooy is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and electrophysiology.
Dr. VerNooy chose electrophysiology because not only does it allow him to do procedures, but he also can follow patients over the long haul. “I enjoy the relationship that I develop with patients, and seeing the benefits from the various treatments and procedures over time,” says VerNooy. “We see all ages of patients in EP – from teens with SVT (supraventricular tachycardia – a type of rapid heart rhythm) to octogenarians with pacemakers.” He says that EP is gratifying in part because the technology is constantly changing, and a physician must continue lifelong learning to stay current.
Dr. VerNooy has lived in a number of states including Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, Connecticut, New York, Virginia, and most recently, North Carolina. He said he “keeps moving south.” He and his wife Velleda, a registered cardiac, vascular, and abdominal ultrasonographer, both enjoy travel, outdoor sports, and boating. Velleda is a marathon runner, and volunteers with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team in Training program, the world’s largest endurance sports training. She plans to continue her involvement with the local chapter when she moves to Mobile.
